Danger is a permanent feature of life as a human rights defender. From defamation and stigmatisation, unwarranted criminal or civil proceedings, to intimidation and attacks, forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, they put their lives on the line on a daily basis. More than 300 human rights defenders were killed in 2019 alone. Two-thirds of these killings took place in Latin America, where impunity from prosecution is often the norm. As many of their freedoms come under increasing threat, it is vital that we ensure their safety.
